FOR THE HOME:
Before you decide to give a gift that you hope will be displayed in a family's kitchen, living room or bathroom, see if you can peek into the color scheme that they already have. If your item is a stark red against their cool blues and warm browns, they may not feel comfortable using your gift among their items. Take time to check, and then your gift won't be a burden!
- Make potholders for their kitchen. Here are several patterns for nice ones: Knit Pot Holder/Hot Pad, Crochet Starburst HotPad, Crochet Flower Potholder, Crochet Potholder in UK terms. You can find many more patterns by searching for potholders in your favorite search engine.
- Make pillows - these can be decorative (heart, squares, button), useful (neck pillow), or for kids (butterfly, doggie).
- Make a throw or blanket. There are so many patterns for blankets. Many are easy, some are more challenging. Here are some of my favorites: Knit Pinwheel Baby Blanket, Crochet Tiramisu Blanket, Crochet Heathers Throw, No Sew Fleece Blanket, Easy Flannel Baby Blanket, and if you like to quilt, there is an endless registry of free quilt blocks at Marcia Hohn's Quilter's Cache.
