Craft: Make a Heart Wreath for Valentine's Day

AnnaVirginia Fashion: Valentine's Heart Wreath
I've been wanting to buy a wreath for Valentine's Day for our front door, but I just can't bring myself to pay the price for ones that I'm not in love with.

Remembering a project I made many years ago, I decided to make one on my own.  Here's what I did (click on a photo to enlarge):

Using my husband's help, we shaped a heart out of a wire hanger.  It's the only wire hanger in the house, so only one chance to get it right!

I then cut fabric about 8 inches tall (folded in half makes it four inches tall), and cut it in 3 inch wide strips.

I then looped these strips around the wire heart.

Here's how to loop through:

I then cut two more colors of fabric at the same height but I did each strip at 2 inches wide.

And two more colors at 1 inch wide:

Using the same looping method, I put these strips in an order around the heart.  I really had to tug and pull to get the last few strips to fit, but I like how fluffy and tight it looks!

I looped one last strand through the inward peak at the top and tied a knot so that I would have a way to hang it on the door.  If there was any more room, I'd have added even more colors!

Let me know what you think! And tell people that you read about this here!

Fashion Design Hint #1 Button Closures

I've decided to start posting some hints on Fashion Design.  Some of these may be answers to basic questions or may let you know something you never considered!

Button Closures

The overlap of fabric under a button band is gender specific.  Did you know that?

Men's clothing always overlaps so the the fabric lays Left-over-Right (if you're wearing the garment).

Women's clothing varies.  The rule is that if you're wearing the garment, the fabric should lay Right-over-Left (one of my college professors says that women are always right, so that's how I remember which comes first).  This changes, however, mainly in jeans.  Jeans were originally made for men, so most women's jeans follow the rule for men's jeans.  Some other types of pants, like corduroys, may follow either the jeans rule or the women's rule.

Quick Creation: Crochet Kitty

My 13-month-old can say some sounds of certain animals.  This include cats, dogs and elephants.  We have stuffed toys of dogs and elephants (makes asking her to make the noise really fun!), but no cats!

I decided to see if I might be able to make a little cat.  It worked up really fast!  I did it all in one day (yesterday), and showed it to her today.  She's already snuggled with it and says "meow" when she spots it!

Here's a link to the original crochet pattern by MarmaladeRose.  Her instructions are in British terms, so if you're from the USA, you'll need to make some modifications.  The USA equivalent to double crochet is half double crochet.  You can substitute hdc for her dc instructions.  The kitty that I made, however, has single crochet substituted.
